“INVITATION TO COMPOSERS“ / „INVITAŢIE CĂTRE COMPOZITORI”

British Council a organizat, în data de 20 octombrie 2010 conferinţa de presă dedicată prezentării în România a proiectului „Invitaţie către compozitori” - un proiect unic, ce se defăşoară în perioada 2009-2011 în trei ţări partenere: Marea Britanie,‪ Franţa şi România.

Organizat de London Schubert Players Orchestra, în parteneriat cu Institutul Cultural Român din Paris şi Asociaţia Info Manager România, cu suportul Comisiei Europene – prin Fondul Cultural European, acest proiect încurajează compozitorii contemporani să creeze lucrări noi, inspirate de ideile muzicale din secolele XVIII, XIX si XX şi să îmbine elemente culturale din propriul patrimoniu cultural.
În România, proiectul beneficiază şi de sprijinul British Council şi de parteneriatul cu Societatea Română de Radiodifuziune.

Lansat în martie 2010, la Royal Academy of Music din Londra, în prezenţa Ambasadorului României la Londra, domnul Ioan Jinga, „Invitaţie către compozitori” va prezenta noi creaţii muzicale, printr-un număr impresionant de concerte, ateliere, seminare, conferinţe şi prezentări de produse audio-vizuale şi de publicaţii, în Marea Britanie, Franţa şi România.
Aventura muzicală pe care o propune proiectul „Invitaţie către compozitori” conduce publicul şi interpreţii la sursa inspiraţiei muzicale, urmărind să creeze o nouă relaţie între compozitori, interpreţi şi publicul ascultător.
Compozitorii vor îmbogăţi repertoriul muzicii clasice europene prin formule instrumentale inedite sau extrem de rare în repertoriul muzicii de cameră. Compoziţiile selectate anual vor fi interpretate în concerte organizate în Marea Britanie, Franţa şi România, pe parcursul a doi ani (2010 – 2011). De asemenea, cele mai bune lucrări vor fi înregistrate şi publicate, prezentate, ca şi creatorii lor, marelui public.
Cinci lucrări aparţinând unor compozitori celebri - Schubert, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, Messiaen şi Enescu, au fost alese ca „modele” de inspiraţie şi sunt interpretate şi înregistrate în paralel cu noile piese.
Publicul va deveni el însuşi parte a procesului de creaţie, participând la dialogul dintre compozitori şi interpreţi în cadrul mai multor seminarii şi ateliere.

"Motivaţia din spatele acestui proiect este potenţialul pentru crearea de oportunităţi pentru mulţi compozitori contemporani în mod simultan. Acesta prevede noi provocări pentru compozitori şi artiştii interpreţi promovând dialogul inter-cultural între compozitori, muzicieni şi public " – Anda Anastasescu, director de proiect.

‪În România, timp de o săptămână, în perioada 20-27 octombrie 2010, proiectul “Invitaţie pentru Compozitori” va prezenta publicului noi compoziţii muzicale în cadrul concertelor, forumului internaţional de compoziţie şi a atelierelor de lucru ce vor avea loc în interpretarea London Schubert Players, astfel:
• Cluj, 21 octombrie în cadrul Festivalului Toamnă Muzicală Clujeană – dezbatere şi concert ;
• Bucureşti, 26 octombrie, la Sala Radio – dezbatere cu publicul şi concert;
• Forumul Internaţional de Compoziţie, 27 octombrie, orele 11:00 – 18:00, în sala George Enescu a Universităţii Naţionale de Muzică.

Atelierele de lucru susţinute înaintea concertelor şi în cadrul Forumului de compoziţie vor permite un schimb de idei între publicul participant, instrumentişti şi compozitorii Drew Wilson si Mihail Cretu din Marea Britanie.
Publicul este invitat să se alăture acestei călătorii muzicale, ce cuprinde o premieră mondială, 6 compoziţii în premieră românească şi o premieră bucureşteană în interpretarea excepţională a artiştilor: Anda Anastasescu, Ken Aiso, Yuri Zhislin, Dominika Rosiek, Matthew Huber, Mihail Cretu, Helen Pierce şi Mariya Sotirova.

Invitatie-intalnire cu organizatorii proiectului european muzical Invitation to Composers.

Buna ziua,

Avem placerea de a va invita la o intalnire cu organizatorii evenimentului muzical Invitation to Composers - un proiect european initiat de initiat de catre London Schubert Players Trust in 2009 si dezvoltat in parteneriat cu Institutul Cultural Roman Paris si Asociatia Info Manager din Bucuresti, cu suportul Comisiei Europene.
Acest proiect incurajeaza compozitorii contemporani sa scrie lucrari noi, inspirate de ideile muzicale din secolele XVIII, XIX si XX, imbinand elemente culturale din patrimoniul propriu.

Activitatile din Romania sunt sprijinite de British Council si Radiodifuziunea Romana.

Doamna Anda Anastasescu, pianist, fondator si director muzical al orchestrei de camera London Schubert Players, va fi prezenta la aceasta intalnire, in calitate de director al proiectului european Invitation to Composers. Alaturi de dansa, vor fi doi dintre muzicienii participanti in acest proiect - compozitorul si contrabasistul Mihail Cretu si compozitorul Drew Wilson din Marea Britanie. Toti trei, impreuna cu doamna Ionela Flood, reprezentand Asociatia Info Manager din Romania, va vor da detalii despre activitatile din Romania ce se vor desfasura in perioada 20-27 octombrie si vor raspunde intrebarilor dumneavoastra.

Just before we take the project to Romania - where we will appear on National Radio and TV - we give a Seminar with musical illustrations on Sunday October 17th at 4pm in London (72 Warwick Gardens, W14 8PP), with the participation of composer Dr Drew Wilson who wrote for us Nocturne with Cloudscape for Solo Violin, Solo Piano, String Quartet and Double Bass. The seminar will be followed by refreshments and we are cordially inviting you to book a seat in advance as places are limited - having in mind we play as a Septet on that day ! Entrance fee £12.

The composer describes his work: The title is derived from an 1870 wood engraving by Gustave Doré (an artist I associate primarily with his illustrations for Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner) called Folktales - A Voyage to the Moon, in which a sailing ship is lifted into the sky, it would seem by the gravity of a vastly enlarged moon. I wrote the following narrative for my own amusement and in order to enrich my store of images whilst composing:
A ship was once becalmed some leagues from the Azores. Lack of water and nourishment affects the mind of a mariner in the crow’s-nest and, bewitched by a full moon, he thinks he sees lakes and rivers and a city with a fair harbour. The ship seems to float clear of the sea with a strange creaking of planks and straining of ropes as if sailing before a following wind. In reality the ship with its crew reaches a safe haven but the sailor’s fantasy persists and for the rest of his days he believes he is living with people on the moon.
The sea looks quite choppy in the engraving and, although much of the piece is shadowy and mysterious, I imagine the moment the ship rises out of the water there is almost as much noise and excitement as a rocket lifting off a launch pad. But once she attains extraterrestrial orbit, she floats once again with a surreal serenity.

Invitation to Composer-Royal Academy of London on Sunday 28th November 2010, at 7pm

We are approaching the end of the first phase of Invitation to Composers - our musical journey funded by the European Union - and would like very much to have you with us in the Royal Academy of London on Sunday 28th November at 7pm for our European Odyssey, the last concert in the 2010 series.

The programme crowns one year of events of various sizes and styles and promises to fulfil the expectations of a true Finale: along Mendelssohn's Double Concerto for Piano Solo, Violin Solo and Strings - a little-known work, full of drama, lyricism and spark - we will play in the same instrumental combination: a Nocturne with Cloudscape; The Outermost Gate on the thoughtful poem But if I go through the Fields by Swedish poet Nils Ferlin; the exuberant J'ai trouve les Histoires; three Concertante Waltzes; and Annabel Lee, an amusing Sinfonia Concertante on a poem by Edgar Allan Poe. The composers come from England, Sweden, Romania, Czech Republic and the US.

I am joined by the outstanding Solo violinists Yuri Zhislin and Ken Aiso, pianist Alberto Portugheis and the Rivoli String Quartet.

Invitation to composers -Musical seminar -22 July at 6pm

Dear Friends,

Thank you very much to those many who came to our As You Like It event in the Romanian Cultural Institute last week and gave us an enthusiastic full house to perform for. The four composers came to London from the US, Romania, Italy and Croatia, to hear the World Premieres of their works. They had a very satisfying time with us and we have now recorded their works for the first CD of the project.

Next week, on 22 July at 6pm we are holding a seminar with musical illustrations at 72 Warwick Gardens, followed by a buffet party. The event will be presented by myself, the London Schubert Players and the 78 years-old Swedish composer of German origin, Eberhard Eyser. His work, The Nightingale was singing all night long is written for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, and inspired by Schubert's Trout Quintet.

Extending Europe’s classical music repertoire

When the London Schubert Players’ Chamber Orchestra (LSP) issued its first
‘Invitation to Composers’ they had a clear goal in mind – to extend the European
repertoire of new contemporary classical music for specific, and rare, chamber music
combinations.

The first ‘Invitation to Composers’ was issued in 2008 to composers of any age and
nationality to write short works for “specific chamber music combinations which do not exist
or are very rare in the standard classical music repertoire”. For Anda Anastasescu, LSP’s
founder and artistic director, the inspiration for the project came as a result of difficulties
experienced in finding quality works for specific instrumental combinations.
“For 18 years, as a professional performing group we encountered difficulties in
programming a number of great chamber works by Schubert, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns,
Messiaen and Enescu – because they are each written for a specific instrumental
combination for which no other noted composer has so far written. In addition, we were
seduced by the idea of performing interesting combinations which the standard European
repertoire does not offer,” explains Anda.
The project is a partnership between the UK, France and Romania. It includes the
organization of concerts, seminars, workshops and conferences in all three countries, with
performances and presentations of the most inspired of the new works submitted to the
project. For this project, the LSP is collaborating with the Romanian Cultural Institute in Paris
and the Asociata Info Manager (AIM) in Bucharest. The official launch of the project in
London was held on 31 March 2010 at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in the presence
of Philip Cashian, Head of Composition at the RAM and a very influential figure in musical
composition..

A rich selection
A total of 22 works were selected during the first year of the project, submitted by composers
from 11 countries (Belarus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Romania,
Sweden, UK and the US). The works were inspired by four models: Schubert’s Trout Quintet
for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass; Mendelssohn’s concerto for solo piano, solo
violin and string quintet; Saint-Saens septet for trumpet, piano and string quintet; and
Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps for piano, violin, clarinet and cello.
Norwegian composer, Bj¢rn Bolstad Skjelbred, saw in the ‘Invitation to Composers’ project
something different from the many other calls for scores and invitations to composers. “This
project stood out from the others because of its reference to specific pieces of music,
composers and instrumental combinations, and because of the musical calibre of its models.
The main motivation for my contribution to the project was imagining a piece of my own
music being compared to or put next to a landmark piece.”
For UK composer, Drew Wilson, the ‘models’ also provided an immediate creative impetus,
while leaving a free reign to the imagination: ”It will be very interesting to hear the different
approaches taken from the same starting point, especially given the very diverse cultural
backgrounds of the composers taking part.”
The composers will also have the opportunity to meet each other at the various events and
concerts organised. This is expected to provide further scope for the exchange of ideas and
comparison of musical approaches. “Cultural exchange in one's own field is always
interesting and instructive. Those of us from different countries will be the product of different
teaching and to some extent aesthetic environments, which throw a revealing light on one's
own preferences and - yes - prejudices, which hopefully get reduced as we are better
informed!” notes Drew.

Linking past and present
As well as filling gaps in Europe’s musical repertoire and enriching it with new and
interesting pieces from across the continent, the project also serves as a bridge between
past and contemporary composition.
“The project aims to create a new dimension in the art of composing in the field of classical
music,” says Anda. ”It inspires and provokes composers' imagination and skills to transmute
some of the greatest European musical ideas of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries into the
21st – providing a direct connection between great European musical traditions and
contemporary thought.”
A fundamental premise of the project is that the new pieces will be played alongside the
‘model’ they were inspired by. This is expected to bring new attention and a fresh eye to the
older pieces. “Somehow, you hear new things in them when they are set against the
contemporary compositions,” adds Anda. “They seem more modern, more courageous, and
you can imagine how it was when they were first composed.”
For the composers, too, the approach chosen fosters an appreciation of the past. “Through
this link with important compositions of the past, contemporary musicians can identify with
the West’s extraordinary musical tradition,” notes Roberto Brisotto (Italy), who based his
composition – Evocations Rituelles – on Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps.

Collaborative creation
Another key aspect of the project is the close collaboration between the musicians and the
composers. For the composer Ivan Božičević (Croatia), concerned by contemporary music’s
tendency to focus on complexity over beauty, this was a major consideration: “It seemed to
me that the ‘Invitation to Composers’ contained a genuine quest for beauty in new music.
The works were to be judged by future performers themselves, not by some complexityseeking
composer peers.”
The close collaboration between the musicians and the composers is appreciated by all
those involved. “For most composers, access to musicians is pretty limited,” says Drew
Wilson. “Having the opportunity to hear your piece played, participate in rehearsals and get
feedback from the players is really quite exciting. Sometimes things are not quite as you
imagined them, or are even not possible in practice. The interaction with the musicians
allows you to adapt the piece, refine it, before it is actually performed in front of the public.”
For the musicians, too, the exchange with the composers is very satisfying. Violin and viola
player, Ricardo Zwietisch, will be performing many of the new pieces with the London
Schubert Players: “It is very motivating to be discovering completely new pieces of music
and being able to get direct feedback from the composers themselves. It allows a creative
collaboration which helps to shape the piece and enrich the musical interpretation.”
As a viola player, he is also very pleased to see the creation of new pieces for viola. “There
are very few classical pieces written for the viola, so these new pieces will be an important
addition to the viola repertoire.”



The Invitation to Composers project is coordinated by Anda Anatasescu, founder and
artistic director of the London Schubert Players’ Chamber Orchestra. It is supported
by the European Commission’s Culture Programme 2007-2013 [Ref:…… ] The
selected works of the project will be published and recorded on CD, and a book will
be published about the composers.

Hear The Nightingale was singing all night long
on 22 July at 6pm,
in a Seminar held by Anda Anastasescu and the 78 years-old Swedish composer of German origin,
Eberhard Eyser,
at 72 Warwick Gardens, followed by a buffet party.

The Nightingale is written for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.

Spend the weekend of 24/25 July in North Norfolk listening to our first
Schubertiade Festival
where rivers Ant and Bure meet.
Concerts take place in beautiful old churches and an art historian will take you through the churches' history and architecture, as well as a tour of some of the most interesting in the area. Strawberry teas will be served.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe
on August 26th,
performing in the Arts Centre of the very school which, for 10 years, offered the Silvestri scholarship places to the young Romanian scholars supported by my Silvestri Foundation. ___________________________________________________________________

Delegatia comunitatii romanesti din Marea Britanie in vizita la Bucuresti

La invitatia secretarului de stat pentru românii de pretutindeni, în perioada 19-20 mai 2010, o delegatie a românilor din Marea Britanie a fost la Bucuresti pentru o serie de întâlniri cu autoritatile statului roman.




Delegatia din Marea Britanie s-a întâlnit cu domnul Traian Basescu, Presedintele României, care a subliniat disponibilitatea autoritatilor de la Bucuresti de a sprijini comunitatea de români stabiliti în Marea Britanie atât sub aspectul pastrarii identitatii culturale, lingvistice si religioase cât si al integrarii în societatea britanica.





Românii din Marea Britanie au discutat, de asemenea, cu domnul Eugen Tomac, secretar de stat pentru românii de pretutindeni despre nevoia scolilor de duminica de limba româna în Regatul Unit, despre problemele legate de accesul pe piata muncii din Marea Britanie pentru români si despre cum ar putea contribui comunitatea româneasca la schimbarea imaginii României în Marea Britanie.



În cadrul discutiilor a fost accentuata nevoia unei comunicari mai strânse între românii din Marea Britanie si autoritatile din România.






În cadrul întâlnirii cu domnul Teodor Baconschi, ministrul afacerilor externe, s-a discutat despre posibilitatea deschiderii unui consulat general la Edinburgh si despre continuarea demersurilor diplomatice pentru ca românii sa beneficieze de drepturi egale cu ceilalti cetateni ai statelor membre UE în ce priveste accesul pe piata muncii din Marea Britanie.




Ministrul afacerilor externe a încurajat totodata comunitatea de români care lucreaza în City, principalul centru financiar al Marii Britanii, sa furnizeze României expertiza financiara prin intermediul ambasadei de la Londra.


Discutiile de la Ministerul Educatiei, Cercetarii, Tineretului si Sportului s-au axat pe nevoia mentinerii identitatii românesti în cadrul comunitatii din Marea Britanie, dorinta dezvoltarii scolilor de duminica de limba româna, posibilitatea înfiintarii de lectorate românesti în Regatul Unit si organizarea de cursuri de limba, cultura si civilizatie româna pentru comunitatea româneasca din Marea Britanie.



De asemenea, s-a discutat despre situatia studentilor români care studiaza în Regatul Unit.

În timpul discutiilor de la Ministerul Muncii, Familiei si Protectiei Sociale, membrii delegatiei au accentuat nevoia eliminarii restrictiilor de pe piata muncii din Marea Britanie pentru cetatenii români, necesitatea unei mai bune informari a românilor care muncesc în Regatul Unit despre drepturile lor si integrarea absolventilor români din Marea Britanie pe piata muncii din România.



Membrii delegatiei au fost primiti si la Institutul Cultural Român, unde au atras atentia asupra nevoii pastrarii identitatii românesti în cadrul comunitatii din Marea Britanie. A fost subliniata importanta promovarii dreptului cultural în diaspora si necesitatea implicarii oamenilor de afaceri în actiuni culturale românesti în Marea Britanie.




În timpul întâlnirii cu domnul William Gabriel Brînza, deputat de diaspora, mebrii delegatiei au discutat despre initiativa înfiintarii unei comisii parlamentare pentru românii din strainatate si despre problemele legate de accesul pe piata muncii din Marea Britanie pentru români.

În cadrul vizitei la TVR International, mebrii comunitatii românesti din Marea Britanie au subliniat necesitatea realizarii mai multor reportaje despre partile frumoase ale României, despre încheierea unor parteneriate de mediatizare a evenimentelor din cadrul comunitatii românesti din Regatul Unit, precum si despre difuzarea mai multor reportaje din diaspora.




În timpul întâlnirii de la Societatea Româna de Radiodifuziune, membrii delegatiei s-au aratat interesati de colaborarea cu radiourile publice din România, atât în ce priveste mediatizarea evenimentelor din cadrul comunitatii românesti din Marea Britanie, cât si realizarea unor proiecte comune.
